20 things to do in 2010*

  1. Try out a sport/activity I've never tried before. – Check sa zipline (thanks Ging!)
  2. Travel to a new place.
  3. Be in the center of a love triangle. (wahaha. ambisyosa! nasuya man gud ko ni ani niya. and the zara cabanlet as always) – Help someone fulfill something on their resolution list. – Changed it to this one nalang kay para nalang dili magsakit atong dughan sa love triangle. Also check because I helped Leslie out with something. 🙂
  4. Go on at least 20 first dates. – date. n. social engagement with romantic intentions
  5. Learn to bake brazo de mercedes or make embutido from scratch.
  6. Eat something (some fruit, vegetable, animal, body part of an animal, or dish) I've never tried before.
  7. Log 10 hours of volunteer service.
  8. Party with someone famous – "famous" part of this equation to be judged by Tanya
  9. Make friends with someone online and EB with that person.
  10. Read 20 new books.
  11. Write a short story (or a long one).
  12. Kiss someone gwapo (because how can I let the year go by without having kissed someone goodlooking? And take note sa pro-active phrasing of this resolution. It's not "be kissed by someone gwapo"; I will do the kissing, thank you very much) – "gwapo" part of this equation to be determined by Leslie
  13. Watch 10 foreign films – foreign does not include Hollywood blockbusters even though, technically, they are foreign to us.
  14. Crash a party. Just because.
  15. Buy myself something unnecessary.
  16. Finish the Learn with French Michel CDs (Discs 1-8)
  17. Add 20 new friends to Facebook. – "New" means people I've never met or known before.  Not "new to Facebook." Or "newly discovered on Facebook."
  18. Do a lap around the Acad Oval.
  19. Pretend to be someone for an entire day (because it's fun. And I need a break from myself).
  20. Submit/audition for/apply to at least 10 things: Reader's Digest contests, research journals, cooking competitions, etc. – So far, I've applied to this, 9 more to go!

*If I check off everything in this list, Ging is treating me to a meal at Bistro Mercedes. Yay!

Time for the annual review:

  1. No. of people I fell in love with: Just 1. Still you, Jensen Ackles. And maybe Frankie Landau-Banks if I become a lesbian pedophile. Why do I even bother counting this thing? Because let's face it, unless you're Zara Cabanlet, this number is not going to change anytime soon. New rule: keep track of something else more worthwhile…weight maybe? Hmm…
  2. No. of new friends I made: (See this is something I can count that actually makes me smile) Several. Lieza, Arjay, Erwin, Gabby, Memet, Leah, Paul, and the rest of the Filipinos living in Davis; Heewon, Tae, and the rest of the freshman Comm grad students; Ivy; Byron; Mike
  3. No. of jobs I've had: 3—writing for the magazines, teaching for UCD, and working on the $10 Initiative
  4. New places I got to visit: The East Coast—New York, New Jersey, DC, Philadelphia, Connecticut; also, Vegas
  5. Books I can cross off my to-read list: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, The Book Thief, Letters to a Young Poet, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, the latest in the Artemis Fowl and Sookie Stackhouse series (and others I'd-rather-not-have-read a.k.a the Twilight series & Confessions of a Shopaholic).
  6. Things I wrote and actually finished: (What seemed like) a ton of papers for school, several articles & a few poems (all commissioned by the magazine of course, since money is the only thing that can get me to spout poetry), and *shudder* a cheesy script for this crappy video I made. No brilliant novella this year, folks.
  7. No. of times I got to go home: Zero 😦
  8. Great things I got to see: the Statue of Liberty (not bad); all those awesome things in the Smithsonian and the MET, including the dinosaur bones, the Hope Diamond, and the cool paintings; Cirque du Soleil's LOVE!, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, Indy 4, The Dark Knight, Slumdog Millionaire, Paris Je T'aime, Across the Universe (thanks for the dvds Macks!); Charles, Carlo, Manu, Nicole, and Richie, all of whom I haven't seen since God knows when; also, live and in person: Martin Yan & Death Cab for Cutie
  9. Notable things I learned: I would never have imagined ever saying this but…statistics is fun! (at least when you're working on SPSS and not on SAS); random bits of trivia on neglected positives, panopticons and its creator (Jeremy Bentham), the identity of the man in the coffin in LOST (also Jeremy Bentham), the biggest, best chocolate chip cookies are quite possibly in New York; and the perfect recipe for leche flan comes from Lola. Still haven't found out who the mother is in HIMYM but I guess I can safely rule out Stella.
  10. No. of blog entries for 2008: 60. Yikes! Was my social life really that dead?

At the start of every new year in my journal, I do a review of sorts for the past year. I'm sure I leave out many things from the summary and it definitely doesn't capture all the important points of the year gone by but it's reassuring to read something at the end of my yearly journal entries, most of which are rather depressing, and find out that despite my whiny, self-pitying soliloquies, I did, after all, manage to have a good year, accomplish a lot of things and though, not quite changed the world, at least brought some change to my life (though admittedly not always for the better). So, without further ado, here's my recap of 2007 (Where's yours?):

  1. No. of people I fell in love with: 0 (unless you count Jensen Ackles)
  2. No. of new friends I made: A few—my friends from grad school, Julie Gomez & her brother, Noel, (whom I hadn't met before), Isabel, Ryan, Lucci & Jesse.
  3. No. of jobs I've had: 3—freelance writer, ESL teacher at SMS, TA at UCD, and a fourth would be keeping inventory at Threadsafe.
  4. New places I got to visit: The States—San Francisco, Sacramento, LA, Napa
  5. Books I can cross off my to-read list: Phantom of the Opera, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, Animal Farm, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, On Writing, Summerland
  6. Things I wrote and actually finished: More magazine articles, 2 term papers, 2 Spanish essays for that DELE exam, and a couple of blog entries. Sadly, my big Hollywood movie stays in my mind and not on paper.
  7. No. of times I got to go home: Once, after my DELE exam but that was because I was already living there.
  8. Great things I got to see: the Golden Gate Bridge (pretty), the vineyards of Napa Valley (prettier), Zac Efron!, most of the Hollywood tourist spots, Kuh Ledesma's home/resort in Tagaytay, Supernatural Season 2 (sooo much better than Season 1), Pushing Daisies, Gossip Girl, Entourage 3 & 4, Brothers & Sisters, 300 (of the hottest abs ever!), The Bourne Ultimatum, and Ate Freya, Alnie, Mabelle and Joanna after a considerable number of years.
  9. Things I learned: Whitewater rafting is fun!; Dumbledore is gay; I don't really like milk and honey all that much; these 5 things plus the cognitive dissonance theory; I'm probably not getting married and now I know why; The best hotel buffet in Manila is at the Hyatt; wine goes with many things but the same can't be said for statistics; I'm allergic to naproxen sodium, acetaminophen and/or aspirin; and I'd happily trade a little bit of ambition for a little piece of home.
  10. No. of blog entries for 2007: 29—twenty-six more than the number of entries I have in my journal. Gi mingaw gyud tingali ko'g tabi sa inyo.
